What Solar Window Tinting Does

Solar window tinting is a retrofit film applied to the interior surface of existing glass that blocks solar heat before it enters the room. CoolVu solar films reject between 35% and 80% of total solar energy (TSER) depending on the film selected, while blocking 99% of ultraviolet rays across every product in the line. The result is cooler interiors, lower air conditioning costs, reduced glare on screens, and protection against UV-driven fading of floors, furniture, and artwork, all without darkening the view or replacing windows.

CoolVu offers six solar film families (Signature Ceramic, DarkVu, High Definition, Silver Reflective, Dual Reflective, and Transitional), each engineered for a different balance of heat rejection, visible light transmittance, and exterior appearance. Films range from nearly invisible ceramic options such as Ceramic 70 at 38% TSER and 66% VLT, to high-rejection reflective films such as Silver 15 at 85% TSER and 14% VLT. Every film carries a lifetime warranty on most products.

DarkVu Window Film

Strongest non-mirror glare control.

The darkest non-reflective solar film for maximum glare control.

High Definition Film

Crystal-clear views, near-invisible performance.

High visible light with strong near-infrared heat rejection.

Silver Reflective Film

Maximum energy savings, economical solar blocker.

Highest total solar rejection with strong daytime privacy.

Dual Reflective Film

Heat and glare control with daytime privacy.

Reflective outside, livable view inside, day and night.

Transitional Window Film

Photochromic: darkens in sun, clears in shade.

Automatically adjusts tint with sunlight. No wiring or switches.

Residential & Commercial Applications

Solar window tinting works on both homes and commercial buildings. South- and west-facing windows, sunrooms, skylights, storefronts, and glass curtain walls see the largest improvement in comfort and energy cost. During the free on-site consultation we measure each opening and match the film to the glass type and exposure.

Solar Window Tinting: Common Questions

Is solar window tinting worth the investment?
Solar window tinting typically pays for itself through energy savings within two to four years, depending on the glass exposure and film selected. CoolVu Signature Ceramic films reject up to 82% of total solar energy, which directly reduces air conditioning load on sun-exposed glass. Every CoolVu solar film also blocks 99% of ultraviolet rays, which prevents fading of hardwood floors, furniture, rugs, and artwork, damage that is expensive to repair or replace. The film is applied to existing glass in a single visit with no construction disruption, and most CoolVu solar films carry a lifetime warranty on most products. For homes and commercial buildings with west- or south-facing glass, the combination of lower energy costs, UV protection, and glare reduction makes solar tinting one of the highest-return improvements available without replacing windows.
How much heat does solar window tinting block?
CoolVu solar films reject between 35% and 85% of total solar energy depending on the product selected. Silver Reflective 15 delivers the highest rejection at 85% TSER with 84% glare reduction, but it creates a reflective exterior. Signature Ceramic 10 rejects 82% TSER without any reflective appearance. For spaces that need maximum clarity, HD 70 rejects 55% TSER while transmitting 69% of visible light. The amount of heat blocked depends on the film, the glass type, and the direction the window faces. South- and west-facing glass sees the largest improvement. During the free on-site consultation, we measure your glass exposure and recommend the film that matches your heat-reduction goal without over-darkening the space.
Will solar tinting make my windows dark or reflective?
That depends entirely on which film you choose. CoolVu offers options across the full spectrum. Signature Ceramic 70 transmits 66% of visible light with no reflective appearance, so glass looks nearly unchanged. HD 70 maintains 69% light transmittance with high optical clarity. At the other end, Silver Reflective 15 transmits only 14% of light and creates a strongly mirrored exterior. Dual Reflective films split the difference: reflective outside for heat rejection, lower reflectance inside so you can still see out at night. DarkVu films are dark but non-reflective, controlling glare without a mirror look. We bring samples to every consultation so you can see each film on your own glass before choosing.
Does solar window tinting work in winter?
Yes. Solar window tinting provides year-round benefits. In winter, low-emissivity ceramic and dual reflective films help retain interior heat by reducing heat loss through the glass, which lowers heating costs. Every CoolVu solar film blocks 99% of UV year-round regardless of temperature, protecting floors, furniture, and artwork from fading in both summer and winter sunlight. Glare reduction also matters in winter when the sun sits lower and hits at sharper angles through south-facing windows. For homes with older single-pane glass, solar film is one of the most cost-effective insulation upgrades available without full window replacement.
How is solar window tinting installed?
Solar film is applied to the interior surface of existing glass by a trained CoolVu installer in a single visit. The process involves cleaning the glass thoroughly, cutting the film to the exact pane dimensions, applying it with a solution that allows precise positioning, then squeegeeing out air and moisture for a smooth bond. Most residential jobs are completed in one day with no construction mess. The film cures fully over 15 to 30 days depending on temperature and humidity. During curing, small water pockets may be visible but disappear as the adhesive sets. No furniture needs to be removed, and rooms remain usable immediately after installation.
Can solar film be applied to double-pane or Low-E glass?
Yes, but film selection matters. Not every solar film is safe for every glass type. Dark or highly absorptive films on sealed double-pane units can cause thermal stress cracking by trapping heat between the panes. CoolVu Signature Ceramic and DarkVu films are specifically engineered with low solar absorptance to be safe on double-pane and Low-E glass. Silver Reflective and Dual Reflective films have higher absorptance and require a glass compatibility check before installation. During the free on-site consultation, we identify your glass type (single-pane, double-pane, Low-E, tempered) and recommend only films that are safe for that specific unit. This prevents thermal stress issues and keeps the glass manufacturer warranty intact.
How long does solar window tinting last?
CoolVu solar window films carry a lifetime warranty on most products when professionally installed. The films are engineered for long-term durability and do not peel, bubble, or discolor under normal conditions. Ceramic and HD films use non-metallic construction that will not corrode or interfere with electronic signals over time. Reflective films use stable metal layers bonded between protective coatings. Silver Reflective films carry a commercial warranty of up to 15 years. The lifetime of any installation depends on proper surface preparation and installation technique, which is why CoolVu uses trained installers for every project. We stand behind every installation with the manufacturer warranty and handle any warranty service directly.
