What Privacy & Cloaking Film Does

Privacy and cloaking films control visibility through glass without blocking natural light. CoolVu one-way mirror films create a reflective exterior that prevents people from seeing in during daytime, Silver Reflective 15, for example, delivers 64% exterior reflectance with 85% total solar energy rejection and 99% UV block, combining privacy with solar control in a single installation. The Metal Mirror Shield line provides a sleek mirrored finish specifically engineered for maximum daytime privacy.

Screen-cloaking film uses viewing-angle technology to make digital displays appear black or blank when viewed through the glass from outside, while remaining fully readable from the normal interior position. For full obscuration, frosted and etched films provide permanent privacy with no view through the glass in either direction. Every CoolVu privacy film carries a lifetime warranty on most products.

Privacy Film Options

One-Way Mirror Film

Creates a mirrored exterior that blocks the view in during daylight. CoolVu Silver Reflective and Metal Mirror Shield films deliver high exterior reflectance for strong daytime privacy while rejecting solar heat. Privacy depends on the light differential, brighter outside than inside.

Screen Cloaking Film

Makes monitors, TVs, and digital signage invisible from outside the window. Protects financial data, medical records (HIPAA), and proprietary information visible through glass. The film is applied to the window, not the display, so it works with any screen.

Frosted & Decorative Privacy

Frosted, etched, and gradient films provide permanent privacy with no view through the glass in either direction. Ideal for bathroom windows, conference rooms, and ground-floor offices needing complete visual separation while maintaining natural light transmission.

Common Questions

Is privacy window film worth the investment compared to blinds or curtains?

Privacy film is a permanent, maintenance-free solution that works every day without adjustment. Blinds and curtains block light entirely when closed, require regular cleaning, and wear out. Privacy film maintains natural light transmission while controlling visibility, one-way mirror films like CoolVu Silver Reflective deliver up to 85% solar energy rejection and 99% UV block on top of the privacy function, which blinds cannot do. Screen cloaking film protects digital displays from outside viewing, which no window covering addresses at all. The film is applied once by a professional installer, carries a lifetime warranty on most products, and requires zero daily operation. For commercial properties, the combination of privacy plus solar control in a single installation often eliminates the need for both blinds and solar film.

Does one-way mirror film work at night?

One-way mirror film works by reflecting light on the brighter side of the glass. During the day, sunlight is brighter than interior light, so the exterior surface appears mirrored and people cannot see in. At night, when interior lights are on and the outside is dark, the effect reverses, the interior becomes more visible from outside. For nighttime privacy, curtains or blinds are still needed, or a frosted film can be used instead for permanent 24-hour obscuration. CoolVu Dual Reflective films reduce this reversal by having lower interior reflectance compared to standard mirror films, which provides better nighttime privacy than single-reflective options. We explain these tradeoffs during every consultation.

What is screen cloaking film and how does it work?

Screen cloaking film uses viewing-angle technology to make digital displays appear black or blank when viewed through the window glass from outside. The film is applied to the window, not the screen, so it works with any monitor, TV, or digital signage. Displays remain fully visible and readable from the normal interior viewing position. This protects financial data, medical records, proprietary documents, and client information from anyone looking through the glass. It is commonly installed in financial offices, healthcare facilities subject to HIPAA, legal offices, and any commercial space where screen content is visible from outside through windows. The film does not affect the display quality from the interior viewing angle.

Can privacy film also block heat and UV?

Yes. CoolVu one-way mirror films provide both privacy and solar heat rejection in a single installation. Silver Reflective 15 rejects 85% of total solar energy and blocks 99% of UV while delivering 64% exterior reflectance for strong daytime privacy. Silver Reflective 30 rejects 64% TSER with 42% exterior reflectance for a less mirror-intense option. The reflective surface that blocks the view also blocks solar heat, the two functions are inherent to the same film. For spaces where both privacy and climate control matter, a reflective privacy film eliminates the need for two separate treatments.

How is privacy film installed?

Privacy film is applied to the interior surface of existing glass by a trained CoolVu installer. The glass is cleaned, the film is precision-cut to the pane dimensions, positioned with a solution for exact placement, and squeegeed for a smooth, bubble-free bond. Most residential privacy installations are completed in a single visit. The film cures fully over 15 to 30 days, small moisture pockets may be visible during curing but disappear as the adhesive sets. Screen cloaking film follows the same process and is applied to the window glass, not to the display itself. No furniture needs to be removed and rooms are usable immediately.

Is privacy film removable if I change my mind?

Yes. CoolVu privacy films can be professionally removed without damaging the glass. The adhesive is designed to release cleanly, leaving the glass in its original condition. This makes privacy film a flexible solution compared to permanent treatments like sandblasted or acid-etched glass, which are irreversible. If you move offices, change the layout, or want a different film, the existing film is removed and a new one can be applied to the same glass. Frosted, mirror, and cloaking films are all removable. We handle both installation and removal.

How long does privacy film last?

CoolVu privacy films carry a lifetime warranty on most products when professionally installed. The films maintain their optical properties, reflectance, light transmission, and appearance, for the life of the installation under normal conditions. One-way mirror films do not lose their reflective surface over time; frosted films do not peel, yellow, or haze; and screen cloaking films maintain their viewing-angle control indefinitely. Film longevity depends on proper surface preparation and installation technique, which is why CoolVu uses trained installers for every project.
