Does security film make glass unbreakable?
No. Security film does not make glass unbreakable, the glass will still crack on impact. What the film does is hold the broken shards together in the frame instead of letting them scatter into the room. This creates a barrier that delays an intruder from reaching through the opening, contains dangerous glass fragments, and buys time for occupants and response. The level of protection depends on the film thickness, 4 mil for basic fragment retention, 8 mil for commercial forced-entry delay, 14 mil for institutional security, and whether a wet-glaze attachment system anchors the film to the frame. What is a wet-glaze attachment system and when is it needed?
A wet-glaze system is a bead of structural silicone sealant applied between the edge of the security film and the window frame. Without it, security film holds broken glass together but the entire filmed pane can still push inward out of the frame under enough force. With wet-glaze, the film is anchored to the frame so the filmed glass stays in place even under sustained impact. This is the configuration required for forced-entry delay, active-shooter protection in schools, and blast mitigation. The sealant cures in place and does not affect the window appearance. Can security film also block heat and UV?
Yes. Every CoolVu security film blocks 99% of ultraviolet rays regardless of thickness. For combined heat rejection and security, the HD 70 Secure film rejects 50% of total solar energy while transmitting 70% of visible light and providing the same shatter-containment protection as a dedicated security film. It also reduces glare by 25%. This single film eliminates the need for two separate installations on sun-exposed glass that also needs impact protection. Clear security films (4, 8, 14 mil) provide shatter containment and UV blocking but minimal heat rejection, they are best suited for glass that does not have a solar heat issue.
How is security window film installed?
Security film is applied to the interior surface of existing glass by a trained CoolVu installer. The glass is cleaned thoroughly, the film is precision-cut to the pane dimensions, and applied with a positioning solution that allows exact placement before being squeegeed for a smooth, bubble-free bond. If wet-glaze is specified, the structural silicone sealant is applied around the film perimeter after the film is set. Most commercial security installations are completed within one to two days depending on the number of panes. The film cures fully over 15 to 30 days, during curing, small moisture pockets may appear but will disappear. The space remains fully usable during and after installation.
What thickness of security film do I need?
4 mil provides basic glass fragment retention, the shards stay together on impact but offer limited forced-entry delay. This is appropriate for residential windows where the primary concern is safety from accidental breakage or storm debris. 8 mil provides meaningful forced-entry delay and is the standard recommendation for commercial storefronts, retail glass, and residential sliding doors. 14 mil is the heaviest option and is used for institutional security applications including schools, government buildings, and high-value commercial properties. For any application where the goal is delaying an intruder, 8 mil or thicker with a wet-glaze attachment system is the minimum effective configuration. Does security film work on tempered or double-pane glass?
Yes. Security film can be applied to tempered glass, double-pane insulated units, and laminated glass. However, tempered glass behaves differently from annealed glass when it breaks, it shatters into small cube-shaped pieces rather than sharp shards. Security film on tempered glass holds those cubes together and keeps the pane intact in the frame, which is the primary benefit for forced-entry delay. On double-pane units, the film is applied to the interior surface of the inner pane. Film selection must account for thermal compatibility to avoid stress cracking, we verify the glass type during the consultation.
Can security film protect schools from active-shooter threats?
